Report: New fighting in Sudan's Darfur province

Nairobi/Khartoum - Renewed fighting has broken out in Sudan's restive Darfur province after months of uneasy peace, reports said Monday. The Sudan Tribune quoted the Sudanese army as saying it had attacked rebel positions in the Korma region. Clashes have been ongoing since last week, with at least 18 civilians killed in the battles, the online newspaper reported. The fighting was the first since the outgoing commander of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said in August he considered the war in Darfur over. UNAMID said it had sent a team to investigate the reports and determine the status of the humanitarian and security situation. The conflict in Darfur began in 2003 when mainly non-Arab tribesmen took up arms against what they called decades of neglect and discrimination by the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum. The UN says up to 300,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced by the conflict. The Sudanese government claims only around 10,000 have died.
