US ship attacked by Somali pirates escapes capture (Roundup)

Washington/Nairobi - The Liberty Sun, a US-flagged cargo ship carrying food aid for Africa, was steaming to the Kenyan port of Mombasa under US Navy escort Wednesday after escaping an attempted hijacking by Somali pirates. The attack came just days after US Navy Seals dramatically freed the captain of another US-flagged ship who was being held by a pirate gang. 'The pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at the vessel, which sustained damage,' said a statement from New York-based Liberty Maritime Corporation, the owners of the ship. An email message from a crewman to his mother after the incident, which happened Tuesday, said the crew of the vessel were safe and under escort. The USS Bainbridge hurried to help the Liberty Sun, but the pirates had left by the time the guided missile destroyer arrived. The Bainbridge was also carrying Richard Phillips, the captain of the container ship Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked last Wednesday. The US crew of the Maersk Alabama fought off pirates who boarded the ship, but Phillips was held hostage for five days on a lifeboat. He was freed Sunday when five US Navy snipers killed the three pirates holding him. Phillips was due to meet his crew in Mombasa and fly out to the US. However his crew left without him owing to the delay caused by the diversion. The captain was to fly on a later charter flight. Piracy experts have said they do not expect the US action - and a similar move by French forces that killed two pirates and one hostage - to deter pirates from seeking multi-million-dollar ransoms. Since Monday, pirates have seized the Greek MV Irene EM, the Lebanese-owned MV Sea Horse and two Egyptian fishing boats. The violent rescues have raised fears that pirates will take more extreme action, increasing the chance of further hostage deaths. Pirate gangs have already vowed to avenge their dead colleagues by targeting US and French citizens. Some media reports on Wednesday quoted a man claiming to be pirate commander as saying the attack on the Liberty Sun was in revenge for the killing of Phillips' abductors. Pirates activity has picked up in recent weeks after a lull due to bad weather. Over 20 ships have been attacked in the last three weeks. Nine of those ships are in pirate hands, bringing the total number of ships being held to 17. Almost 300 crew members are being held hostage. The United Nations World Food Programme on Wednesday warned that the pirate activity was threatening millions of Africans in Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo with malnutrition. WFP aid bound for Somalia receives a European Union naval escort, but vessels bound for other ports do not. The Sea Horse was on the way to India to load over 7,000 metric tons of food aid for Somalia, where a combination of drought, conflict and rising food prices has left millions facing hunger. The Liberty Sun was carrying 27,000 tons of WFP food. More than 500,000 metric tons of food aid arrived through Mombasa in 2008, but the WFP said that the port was no longer a secure point of entry for its operations. 'The incident, along with the attack on the Liberty Sun, raises questions about the security of Mombasa as an entry point for WFP aid bound for hunger-stricken countries in east and central Africa,' the WFP said in a statement. In 2008, pirates seized more than 40 vessels in and around the Gulf of Aden and collected tens of millions of dollars in ransoms, prompting the international community to send warships to the region. Around 15 warships from the European Union, a US-led coalition task force and individual countries such as Russia, India and China patrol an area of about 2.85 million square kilometres. The presence of the warships has appeared to have had little effect, and observers say that only by tackling insecurity and poverty in Somalia will piracy finally be halted. Somalia has been without a functioning government since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
