Explosion at police headquarters overshadows Zimbabwe talks

Johannesburg/Harare - The resumption of talks on power- sharing in the Zimbabwean government was overshadowed by an explosion at a police headquarters, South African radio reported Sunday. The police blamed the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) for the attack which took place in the centre of Harare. Nobody was injured in the Saturday evening attack according to initial reports. Police managed to retrieve the remains of a detonator and explosives. Almost four months after disputed parliamentary and presidential elections, President Robert Mugabe and MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai agreed more than a week ago to hold talks. The talks were suspended Monday to allow for deliberations with party leaders. The media said the reason for the suspension of talks was disagreement over how to divide up the ministries in the future government. The two sides met Sunday to resume talks in neighbouring South Africa, which is mediating in the dispute on behalf of the regional grouping the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
