Nigerian militants attack Mobil facility, leave woman dead

Abuja - Militants attacked the Qua Iboe Terminal Jetty of the US-owned oil concern Mobil Producing Nigeria at in the Niger Delta on Monday, leaving a pregnant woman dead. Witnesses to the attack told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that about 50 militants arrived in seven speed boats and attacked the security post at the jetty and engaging the security men in a gun battle. The one fatality, identified as Effiong Willie, was killed when she was caught in the crossfire. The militants overpowered the security men and relieved them of a patrol boat and two machine guns, witnesses said. Michael Zuokuma, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, said the attack was unsuccessful as the militants did not gain access to oil facilities. Militants attacked another oil production site in August 2006 abducting five expatriate workers and killing two private security guards in the process. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
