UN urges military withdrawal from buffer zone, warns high tensions

New York - The UN Security Council on Tuesday urged Ethiopia and Eritrea to pull back their military personnel and equipment from a security zone being manned by a UN peacekeeping force in order to ease tensions. The 15-nation council said the impasse in the peace process to settle the border dispute between the two Horn of African nations was creating concern. The two sides agreed on a ceasefire in 2005 and to abide by recommendations by an international boundary panel to demarcate their border. Ethiopia accepted in March the new border recommendation after Eritrea had done so. 'Members of the Security Council reiterate their call on both parties to show maximum restraint and to refrain from hostile public statements and from any threat or use of force against each other,' the council said in a statement. The UN had been complaining that military buildups inside the temporary security zone by the two countries increased tensions and fears of a new conflict. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
