Ghana opposition MPs call off parliament boycott

Accra - Lawmakers from Ghana's opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have announced they would end their boycott of the country's parliament on Tuesday. In a statement signed in Accra, Minority Chief Whip John Tia said the decision to return to the house was taken on Monday. NDC parliamentarians began their boycott on February 6 to show solidarity with party member and MP for Keta, Dan Abodakpi. Abodakpi was sentenced to 10 years in prison for causing financial loss to the state following a trial that the NDC described as a miscarriage of justice. The boycotting opposition MPs accused Ghana's ruling New Patriotic Party of using 'fast track' high courts to destroy the NDC through political trials that led to the jailing of leading party members and functionaries. Two days into the boycott, Ghana's President John Kufuor appealed to the absent MPs to return to parliament. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
