Album Review: The Cribs – ‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever’

The Cribs are a band from West Yorkshire, England and consist of twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother Ross.  ‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever’ is their third album.  “Mirror Kissers” and “Hey Scenesters!” were singles from their second album ‘The New Fellas’ that performed well on the UK charts (both reaching number 27).

Their sound is described as indie/punk and I can see that since they don’t really cross over into either genre completely.  Whatever genre they’re in they’re upbeat and feature some great tunes.

One of my favorite tracks is “I’m a Realist” which features the line “I’m a realist, I’m a romantic, I’m an indecisive piece of sh*t, I’m indecisive and that’s about it.”  It just amused me.

Not only that but “Be Safe” features a spoken litany that reminded me of that Baz Luhrman’s “Everybody’s Free (to wear sunscreen)” except that I doubt that Luhrman would’ve used the phrase “blowjob” and used the more driving music behind it.  It’s like a punk version of it.  Again it amused me.

I really liked the Cribs and like their musical style, however you might want to define it.

‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever’ is now available at Amazon. Visit the music database for more information.
