Album Review: Sarah McLachlan – ‘Rarities, B-Sides, and Other Stuff, Volume 2’

Never released in the U.S., this 1996 collection features 13of the Canadian singer/ songwriter\'s best B-sides, covers, rarities & soundtrack contributions, 1987-1996. Housed in a double gatefold slipcase, it includes \'Possession\' (Rabbit In The Moon Remix), \'I Will Remember You\' (from the film \'Last Of The Mohicans\'), covers of XTC\'s \'Dear God\', Gordon Lightfoot\'s \'Song For A Winter\'s Night\' & Joni Mitchell\'s \'Blue\', plus live cuts & more mixes! A ...more

It only took twelve years, but the follow-up to the same titled 1996 album finally hits store shelves and does indeed contain treasure.

Canadian artist McLachlan won three Grammys for her best selling album ‘Surfacing,’ amongst others.  This new volume features a duet with Cyndi Lauper on “Time after Time” in what sounds like an acoustic version of Lauper’s famous tune.  She also collaborates with Bryan Adams (“Don’t Let Go”), DMC (a jazzy, rap version of “Just Like Me”), and performs live with Emmylou Harris (“Angel”) and The Perishers (“Pills”).

There’s even a memorable performances, “Homeless,” with African acapella group Ladysmith Black Mambaza where she sings not a lyric.  Two of my favorites though are songs that you might be more familiar with if you have young-uns in your house, “When She Love Me” from Toy Story and “The Rainbow Connection.”

You always got to love that song from the big green guy and Paul Williams, listened to that one a few times.  In my opinion it’s quite a treasure trove for her fans, even if it was a long time in the making.  If pattern holds, volume three should be available in 2020.

Let’s hope that its sooner.
