Wow...I'm listening to the new album right now and it's FANTASTIC! As a fan since 1996, I am not disappointed. Ear candy for me! It is somewhat a departure without having gone too far off. In fact, some could say they've gone more sombre than before, which is kinda the opposite of what you'd expect.
If they are new to you then you must definitely get your hands on their old material. Their first album 'Dummy' in particular is outstanding. 'Numb' will literally numb you.
One recent review mentioned that Portishead are not very listener-friendly; like that was a bad thing. That's the point sometimes, isn't it? I would agree that their music is not for everyday listening. But in the right frame of mind, once in a while, it can be your best friend. It has been mine on many an occasion.
Depends what you like, right?
I like very much
