Album Review: Anne Murray – ‘Duets: Friends & Legends'

By Jeff Swindoll Jan 25, 2008, 16:10 GMT

Canadian singer Anne Murray has been making history.  Specifically she was the first Canadian female singer to hit number one on the United States charts and the first to win a gold record.

Now with a little help from her friends she’s taking a retrospective look back on her career as well as performing duets with those gal pals.  The one that she’s singing with that’s the most surprising is the late Dusty Springfield.

With the permission of the Springfield estate she was able to record “I Just Fall in Love Again” with Springfield’s original vocals.  Ironically this album is also produced by Phil Ramone, who just did a Springfield tribute album with Shelby Lynne.

The rest of the ladies do not come across the ages as Springfield did and include fellow Canadians Celine Dion (“When I Fall in Love” in a live performance) and Shania Twain (“You Needed Me”), Murray’s hit “Snowbird” with Sarah Brightman, “Cotton Jenny” with Olivia Newton-John, and a host of other famous singers.

Murray still has the pipes and is only enhanced by the various guest voices and seems to be having a great time teaming up with these other ladies of song.  I can say that my ears had a great time as well.
