Album Review: R.E.M. – ‘Live’

By Jeff Swindoll Nov 7, 2007, 13:36 GMT

R.E.M. is a rock band that’s made up of Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitars), and Mike Mills (bass, keyboards).  This release marks their first-ever live album and for those fans that cannot or have not attended a R.E.M. concert it will be a thrill.

You have two discs of music for your CD player as well as a DVD of the concert.  The concert was filmed in 2005 at the Point Depot in Dublin, Ireland. The band is supported by Scott McCaughey (guitars, keyboards), Ken Stringfellow (keyboard, guitars) and Bill Rieflin (drums) and there’s a special guest appearance by Daniel Ryan of the Thrills on “(Don’t go back to) Rockville.”

The concert is a mixture of old favorites, like “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?,” “Losing my Religion,” and newer material but since they’ve not made a studio album since 2004 I guess that they’re all old favorites.

Their sound is pleasing to hear again as the enthusiastic audience at the Point Depot demonstrates by singing along or cheering.  It’s quite the set and what’s great about it is the inclusion of both the DVD and the songs on CD.

It’s quite the bargain for the R.E.M. fan and sure beats the cost of airfare to Dublin.
