EP Review: The Wombats – ‘Backfire at the Disco’

By Jeff Swindoll Aug 29, 2007, 23:32 GMT

The Wombats are a band from Liverpool, England although only two of their members are native Liverpudlians (you know the little people that attacked Gulliver).  But seriously, they are Matthew Murphy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, and drums), Dan Haggis (vocals), and Norwegian Tord Overland-Knudsen (bass).

An EP is a short album that is put out but is too short for an album.  The Wombats have to be a great band; any band that uses the term “fulcrum” in a song has to be excellent.

The band has to have a devilish sense of humor to include the line about “Little Miss Pipedream” that the singer sees her “slamming back tequilas like Oliver Reed on a Irish stag do.”  Hilarious.  Not to mention that the song is about a fellow who is worshipping a girl from afar but is told (or sung) with a devilish sense of humor.

‘Backfire at the Disco’ is also a fun tune about a date that was going well until they go to the disco and things start to go wrong.  CSS remixes “Kill the Director” as a bonus track.

I think they have an album coming out in September and I look forward to hearing more from this quirky band since I liked their EP so much.

‘Backfire at the Disco’ is now available at Amazon. Visit the music database for more information.
