Album Review: Thelma Houston – ‘A Woman’s Touch’

By Jeff Swindoll Aug 14, 2007, 22:36 GMT

Thelma Houston has been in the music industry since 1969.  She had her greatest hit in 1977 when her “Don’t Leave Me This Way” reached #1 on the charts.  Her last album was 1990’s ‘Throw You Down’ which the title track reaching #5 on the charts.

It’s been 15 years since Houston has had an album out.  She’s decided to bring out this newest one with a theme.  It gathers together tunes that have long been associated with male performers, but Houston has decided to record her favorite songs with ‘A Woman’s Touch.’

This, of course, necessitated the changing of several “she’s” to “he’s” on several of the songs.  She also adds a blues, R&B, or dance quality to several of the songs.

She covers tracks by Luther Vandross (“Never Too Much”), Sting (“Brand New Day”), Marvin Gaye (“Ain’t That Peculiar”), and Glenn Campbell (“By the Time I get to Phoenix”).

Some of them are recognizable and get close to the originals, but others tunes are given Houston’s touch and are really quite a good take on the original.  It’s good to have Houston back in the studio and let’s hope that she doesn’t wait another 17 years before she puts her powerful voice down on an album again.

‘A Woman’s Touch’ is now available at Amazon. Visit the music database for more information.
