Album Review: David Bowie – ‘Best of David Bowie 1980/1987’

I first became aware of David Bowie in the film Labyrinth and have been a fan ever since. I try to get everything that he puts out and have always found something to like about his albums. The dedicated Bowie fan will have the songs and videos from other collections but if you’re a relative novice then this collection will serve as an instant collection of his ‘80s hits.

However, it was damn good to listen to them in this compilation. The release is a two-disc set with one disc of sound (aka songs) and another of sight (aka music videos). Sight comes first in the listing to I’ll talk about that disc first. It has over an hour of music videos, including “Ashes to Ashes,” “The Drowned Girl,” “Let’s Dance,” “China Girl,” “Cat People (Live from Serious Moonlight),” “Blue Jean,” and many more. Unfortunately, it’s the 3 minute version of “Blue Jean” and not the 22 minute Grammy winning extended version (found on the Best of Bowie DVD). The sound side of thing includes “Let’s Dance,” “Under Pressure,” “Alabama Song,” “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps),” “Absolute Beginners,” “Underground (from Labyrinth),” and a host of others. Many of his hits came in the 1980s and this is a fine sampling of them. Although as I said before, the dedicated Bowie fan will have the songs and videos from other collections but if you’re a relative novice then this collection will serve as an instant collection of his ‘80s hits. ‘Best of David Bowie 1980/1987’ is now available at Amazon.
