Miranda Lambert may be one of country music’s sweethearts, but her new album ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ proves she can hang with its outlaws. The album, which is the perfect follow-up to her debut ‘Kerosene,’ is filled with attitude and scorching lyrics.
Lambert shows her fun side on songs like “Dry Town” and “Famous in a Small Town,” and her emotional side on tracks like “More Like Her” and “Easy From Now On.”
‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ is a rollercoaster ride through music genres – including classic country, pop country, and southern rock. Lambert handles the various styles with a strong voice that shows her confidence and easily identifiable lyrics – even if you don’t have a story of your own to relate with them.
The album kicks off with the revenge-fueled “Gunpowder & Lead” – a track that chronicles the singer’s plans for a boyfriend who has hit her one too many times. She sings “His fist is big, but my gun's bigger” and makes it clear that she is going to teach him that a “little girl’s made of gunpowder and lead.” The song is the perfect way to start an album that is full of attitude.
Other rocking songs include the title track (where Lambert shouts that the pretty girls will know her name), “Dry Town” (which sounds as if it could belong in any honky tonk), and “Getting Ready” (where she describe a breakup that she is ready for).
Lambert slows things down on “Love Letters” (which sounds like it would fit on any classical country album), “More Like Her,” and “Desperation” (both of which have some of the most emotional lyrics on the album).
‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ is as close to a perfect album as you can come. Every song is a winner, and Lambert keeps it entertaining while managing to make an emotional connection with the listener. Although I knew who Lambert was before putting on ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ (I had heard “Kerosene” from her first album), I wasn’t too familiar with her music. I can now say I am a fan of the singer.
From start to finish, ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ is a solid album filled with strong songs that manage to stay with you even after you turn it off. Lambert shows her fun side on songs like “Dry Town” and “Famous in a Small Town,” and her emotional side on tracks like “More Like Her” and “Easy From Now On.”
If you are already a fan of the singer, you will love Lambert’s new album. If you aren’t, take a chance on it. The album might surprise you, and there is plenty to turn you into a fan by the third track.
