Album Review 2: Kings of Leon – ‘Because of the Times’
By Jeff Swindoll Apr 23, 2007, 16:54 GMT

Aha Shake Heartbreak may have blown open the doors of fame for Kings of Leon, but their third full-length album (named for a United Pentecostal Church ministers\' conference) could well usher the Nashville foursome directly to rock and roll\'s zenith. There\'s hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of ...more
Kings of Leon is a rock band made up of Caleb Followill (guitar, lead vocals), Jared Followill (bass guitar), Nathan Followill (drums), and Matthew Followill (guitar). Jared and Caleb are originally from Tennessee and the album has a definite Southern rock feel to it but also has a slightly punk feel to it as well.
It probably helped that the brothers traveled around the South with their traveling preacher father Leon (who was defrocked in 1997, sounds like there’s a story there). They originally tried their hand at country music until a producer steered them towards rock. This would explain the Southern, punk rock, country feel that the band exudes.
The band has a large following in the UK and this album debuted at #1 on the charts there. The album begins well with the epic 7 minute “Knocked Up” which has a throbbing, infectious beat. “Charmer” also has a pulsating beat and I wonder about some of the items mentioned in the lyrics if it couldn’t have some autobiographical meanings, hmmmm.
The rest of the songs are great too and deserve to be cranked up when played since they’re all meant to be played loud.
