They say that the third time is the charm and Josh Kelley delivers with his third album, ‘Just Say the Word.’ He creates a soulful, folksy, rock-a-billy, and ultimately infectious album.
Kelley is an artist that I was unfamiliar with, but am extremely happy to now become acquainted with him. The 12 track album runs the gamut, from the soulful ballad of “Cain and Able” to the upbeat “Pop Game.” Kelly wrote the title track, “Just Say the Word,” about someone (autobiographical perhaps) dealing with a lost love and seeing that love in love again – with someone else.
He even features an encore of the song as the 13th track of the album, but it also features a surprise at the end (more on that in a minute). He even references the nature of popular culture in the upbeat “Pop Game.” “I could flip backwards, Sing a little faster, Bring them all to their feet, Livin’ like a rock star, Climbin up the pop charts, Be the flavor of the week, Now would you still remember my name? In the pop game.”
Listening to the album I highly doubt that with Kelley’s talent that he’d be a flavor of the week, but he may end up living like a rock star. My favorite track on the disc has to be “Mississippi River Girl.” This one has the rock-a-billy flavor to it and makes me wonder, since Kelley spent time in Mississippi - how autobiographical this story is. There’s also a hidden track after the encore of “Just Say the Word.”
The song is called “Love Don’t Live Here” and is by a group called Lady Antebellum. Lady Antebellum consists of Charles Kelley (Josh’s brother), Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood. I’ll have to say that I really liked this song. Guess this album got me acquainted with two bands I want to hear more of – priceless.
