Album Review: Pat Green – ‘Cannonball’

By Patrick Luce Aug 22, 2006, 13:40 GMT

With its breakout single,

With its breakout single, "Feels Like It Should"--a high-octane driving anthem in which he sings of putting "the Boss" on the radio and singing along to "Born to Run"--Pat Green leaves no doubt about this album\'s primary influence. The opening title track offers hard-riffing guitars over hard-driving drums in another Springsteenesque anthem of love\'s redemption. The rest of the album is strong and consistent enough that it could well catapult ...more

Pat Green’s ‘Cannonball’ is 14-track radio friendly rocking country album with a style of delivery from the singer that at times reminds of rock icons Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger.

Although it is his ninth album, Green is making his “big studio” debut with ‘Cannonball.’ However, the singer/songwriter makes sure the album is filled with the kind of music that has continued to make him a fan favorite. He wrote/co-wrote eight of the songs on the ‘Cannonball’ – which is being released on the Sony BMG Music Entertainment label.

There is no doubt that Green’s fans or fans of country music mixed with a little rock will want to check out ‘Cannonball.’ The singer begins the album with the rocking title track that is filled with electric guitar, and lyrics that demonstrate he is at home in both rock and country music genres.

The track’s title is a great description for the entire album – which is filled with one great song after another. Green follows up the title track with more rocking tunes like “Way Back Texas” and “Love Like That” - which reminds of Seger’s songwriting thanks to lyrics that reflect on life.

Green turns a little more country on tracks like “Dixie Lullaby,” “Sleeping with the Lights On,” “I’m Trying To Find It,” and “Finder’s Keepers” – which features a duet with country singer Sara Evans.

‘Cannonball’ is an album that Green and his label have said they hoped would have enough impact to bring the singer to a larger audience. If the quality of songs is any indication, they will succeed in that goal. The album is filled with great songs that reflect on life, love, and simply having a good time. Green keeps the pace moving like the title describes, and makes sure each song is perfect.

I have always been a fan of Pat Green, but was mainly familiar with his radio singles (such as “Wave on Wave”). This album is a perfect place for new fans to be introduced to the artist, but will also not disappoint long time fans.

I would highly recommend ‘Cannonball.’ Green makes sure each song has something to offer fans of country and rock. From the first song, he creates a sound that is reminiscence of other great icons in music, but is also all his own. With radio friendly singles, clever hooks, and great guitar, ‘Cannonball’ has something for everyone, and simply won’t disappoint.
