Singer/songwriter Kelley McRae’s debut studio album ‘Never Be’ features the singer’s haunting voice and powerful lyrics on song after song, and manages to stay with you long after you finish listening to the album.
McRae, a Mississippi native, wrote all 11 tracks on ‘Never Be’ and also plays guitar, piano, and banjo on the album. It was recorded in Brooklyn and is filled with elements of blues mixed with traditional country. Her writing style is similar to the honesty found in Lucinda Williams’ songs and McRae’s voice reminds of classic singers such as Patsy Cline to modern performers such as Sarah McLachlan.
Her album is filled with songs that reflect her life, and her emotions are easily felt by the listener. On songs like “Leavin’ Song” and “Stone Cold Sober,” McRae takes you through the pain of a relationship that has ended. Also, the album is worth buying for the single “Johnny Cash” - which is easily the best song on the album.
She reflects her faith in the song “Break Us” - which lends more to the traditional country music genre and sounds heavily influenced by singers such as Emmylou Harris. The album also benefits from McRae’s harmonies with back-up singers Sarah Fullen and Virginia Kull.
Mc Rae’s ‘Never Be’ is a strong debut for the singer and will please anyone willing to take a chance on someone new. I would highly recommend it to any fan of the many genres she blends to make her own unique sound. Her songs are filled with honest lyrics that clearly mean something to the songwriter. ‘Never Be’ features one great song after the next, and will leave you wanting more. This is simply a great album.
