Def Leppard is back with ‘Yeah!’ – the band’s 12th studio album that demonstrates they still know how to rock.
The album is a collection of cover songs from some of the Def Leppard’s favorite bands from the late 60’s and 70’s. It collects some of the biggest hits and lesser known songs of bands like The Kinks, Badfinger, T. Rex, David Bowie, Sweet, Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople, Free, Faces, and Thin Lizzy
The album is a mixture of songs that fans of rock will recognize and some hidden gems that you may have never heard before Leppard’s take. It starts of with some fast paced rock songs (including “20th Century Boy,” and “Rock On”), then slows things down with the third song - just to kick it back up with “Hell Raiser.” While most of the album is pretty standard guitar rock, the band does slow things down a bit with songs like “10538 Overture” and “Drive-in Saturday.”
I will admit that I had little interest in this CD when I first heard of it, and didn’t really see the point of a band with Leppard’s history releases an album filled with cover tunes from other bands. I am happy to say that I was wrong and this is a great CD. It kicks off with the signature sound of Def Leppard that lets you know this may be a cover album, but it is the band’s take on these songs.
I was getting into the album by “Rock On,” and was hooked on it by “Waterloo Sunset.” This is an album that really has something to offer everyone. If you are already a fan of the songs then you will enjoy Leppard’s take on the tunes. If you have never heard of some of these songs (which I only knew a few of them), then you will enjoy discovering them just as much.
I would highly recommend taking a chance on this album. If you are already a fan of Def Leppard, it won’t disappoint. If you are not a fan of the band, this album just might turn you into one.
