Elvis Takes Record But With Few Records

By James Wray Jan 17, 2005, 2:32 GMT

As predicted Elvis Presley's "One More Night" took the number one spot today in the UK's 1000th singles chart.

Presley now ranks top for the most number ones ever in the UK chart.

However, although it may be fitting that the King of rock 'n' roll takes the thousandth top spot, the days of Elvis when a number one would sell hundreds of thousand of copies are long gone.

The third record that “One More Night” takes is of the lowest selling number one ever, with less than 22,000 copies being sold to achieve the spot, the lowest ever for a number one.

The rest of the Elvis back catalogue will be released through the rest of the year as the label tries to maximize revenue before copyright expires next year.

The low sales figures come just a few months before industry proposal to include the more popular downloads chart when compiling the top ten.
