Madame Tussauds today confirmed all five members of One Direction are to be created as wax figures for a touring attraction that will kick off in three Madame Tussauds venues – London (April 18-July 11), New York (July 19-October 11) and Sydney (October 24- January 28). Further dates and locations will follow.
"We have been overwhelmed by requests for us to feature One Direction," commented Global Head of Marketing, Liz Wells.
"The boys have been top of the most wanted personalities list in London, New York and Sydney for the last 12 months, so we are delighted we can now satisfy public demand by bringing their figures to each of these cities in a special ‘world tour’, which will eventually take in more locations. Louis, Liam, Harry, Zayn and Niall have been involved throughout the sculpting process and our studios team have had great fun working with them at two sittings, taking hundreds of precise measurements and discussing the style their figures will be portrayed in. We'll be recording every step of the process and fans can check out our special microsite - www.madametussauds.com/1D - to see how the figures are progressing, watch exclusive interviews and see behind the scenes photographs."
The boys themselves are reportedly delighted to be getting waxed by Madame Tussauds. Harry commented, "We’re just kind of a bit overwhelmed. We've been to Madame Tussauds and seen the kind of people who are in there. It's crazy to think that we will up there with them". Niall was similarly surprised and excited, saying, "We were super excited to find out that they were making us and that people felt we were worthy of a figure.”
Both Louis and Zayn commented on how honoured they felt. "I think it's going to be quite weird to see yourself as a wax figure. But it’s an amazing honour to be there. If you look at some of the names that are in there, we are very proud," said Louis. While Zayn commented, "This is insane. All the biggest stars around the world get these wax figures made of them and why are we, five normal lads, getting these made? It's an amazing honour, really cool and we can't wait to see them."
Liam added, "We actually first heard when we were over at Madame Tussauds looking at the figures so we were even more like WOW we're going to get one of these made. And they are so amazing as well. The quality of the work that goes on over there is mad."
The sculptors creating the figures are working in close collaboration with the band and are aware thousands of fans will be clamouring for a look at their heroes’ doubles as soon as they make their debut at each venue.
Principle sculptor, Stephen Mansfield, commented, "We are acutely aware that millions of fans around the world will have a lot to say about these figures and we are determined not to let them down. We are hard at work to not only recreate totally accurate physical likenesses, but we want to inject something of the boys’ energy and personalities into their figures too. The boys have been a delight to work with, really co-operative and a huge amount of fun."
From start to finish the creation process will take four months and each figure will cost Madame Tussauds £150,000 to make. The boys will be grouped together casually seated on a school style double bench and fans will be able to sit right beside them. The boys will be dressed in their signature smart-casual stage style, modern tailoring with a fun, youthful twist.
The tour kicks off at Madame Tussauds London on April 18, where the figures will be featured in a special themed One Direction area, and will remain in the attraction until July 11. US fans can see the figures at Madame Tussauds New York from July 19 where they will remain until October 11. And then it's on to Australia where the figures will reach Sydney on October 24 for a three month stay ending on January 28, 2014. Extra tour dates will be announced in the future.
In the meantime fans can keep up to date on how the figures are shaping up and also book ahead to be the first to meet the new One Direction figures, at www.madametussauds.com/1D. Every day this week a new picture of one of the boys will be posted and exclusive content will be added regularly.
