Bonnaroo 2013 is shaping up to be THE music event of the year with Macklemore, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and ZZ Top among the many acts confirmed.
The gig is set to go down in Manchester, Tennessee from June 13 through the 16.
With the No. 1 song in the country for the past few weeks, chances are you've heard (or heard about) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. The Seattle musicians seemingly zoomed out of nowhere to conquer the Billboard charts, go triple-platinum, and fly past 100 million views on YouTube with their hit song, "Thrift Shop."
They don't have a big agent or manager either.
Macklemore's success was based on years of hard work and battling some demons. He first released an EP in 2000.
In between those years Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) has fought addiction, and also partnered with Ryan Lewis to create a new Seattle sound that has swept the world. The duo are currently in New Zealand performing.
Ellen DeGeneres also helped bring them to the masses, falling in love with the song "Same Love," a song inspired by Macklemore's two gay uncles and godfather.
Complex.com published "25 Things You Didn't Know About Macklemore" which reveals Macklemore wrote the lyrics for "Thrift Shop" years ago, but the song didn't come together as the track we know it as today until Ryan Lewis created the beat. They also share that L.A. Reid chased the group to sign but they declined the offer.
And from Macklemore's Facebook page: "We'll be performing on SNL March 2nd. Hosted by Kevin Hart! Hella excited.... #sharkfacegang SUPER excited to be apart of Bonnaroo this year!! BAM!! It goes on-sale on Feb 23 if you're tryin to go. www.bonnaroo.com for more info and tix."
The Seattle newcomers join a star-studded list of performers at the event, including Mumford & Sons, Wilco, John Oates and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, David Byrne and St. Vincent, Glen Hansard, Gov't Mule, Billy Idol and Sam Bush and Del McCoury.
Other major acts to take the stage include Bjork, R. Kelly, Wu-Tang Clan, Kendrick Lamar, Weird Al Yankovic, the xx, Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective.
Fans can expect appearances from comedians Daniel Tosh and Mike Birbiglia in addition to the host of musical acts.
Tickets to the fest, hosted by My Morning Jacket fronter Jim James, go on sale on February 23 at noon EST.
