Seattle hasn't seen hitmakers like Macklemore & Ryan Lewis since Nirvana and Sir Mix-a-Lot.
Ben Haggerty (Macklemore) and Ryan Lewis have crafted an album (The Heist) that has fans of every age and race lured in by the hilarious and well-produced hit song "Thrift Shop."
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s “Thrift Shop” featuring Wanz holds at No. 1 for the fourth week. "Thrift Shop" has also surpassed 100 million views on YouTube. The song is also No. 1 on the iTunes' Official Music Charts for the week ending Feb. 11, 2013.
Seattle native Macklemore posted a concert photo on his Facebook page Wednesday, with the caption "Celebrating the Thrift Shop video hitting 100,000,000 views with the people of Melbourne Australia."
"There's a certain sound that has kind of flooded the mainstream airwaves as far as hip-hop music," Haggerty told Associated Press earlier this month. "The beat doesn't sound anything like that, the lyrics are kind of completely polar opposite from what you hear from most commercial rap records and it's got a hook that's very catchy. So I think that you combine those three things and it equates to an original sounding song that's refreshing to the audience that hears it."
The song celebrates individualism over materialism, and the joy of a "come up" find at the Goodwill. Everyone loves your grand-dad's clothes:
