Katy Perry ties Michael Jackson's singles record
Aug 18, 2011, 8:53 GMT
Los Angeles - The King of Pop now has a competitor - and she's a queen.
Teenage favourite Katy Perry has matched Michael Jackson's record of five number-one singles from the same album, after her party song Last Friday Night hit the top of the US charts Wednesday, according to MTV.com.
The song was taken from Perry's hit Teenage Dream album, which has also yielded top sellers California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework and ET.
Jackson achieved the same mark with his 1987 album Bad, which contained the single hits I Just Can't Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror and Dirty Diana.
Of course, Jackson's achievement came in the pre-internet days when people bought single records, rather than buying individual songs on iTunes or illegally downloading. But that didn't stop Perry from celebrating the achievement.
'What a way to wake up! SO proud to announce that the little-engine-that-could of a song LAST FRIDAY NIGHT is officially #1 & made HISTORY!' the singer tweeted Wednesday. '&u know, I couldn't have done it with out ya, really I owe u guys BIG ... so take this moment to give yourself a high FIVE!!!'
