Argentine troubadour Facundo Cabral murdered in Guatemala
Jul 10, 2011, 9:38 GMT
Guatemala City - Celebrated Argentine singer-songwriter Facundo Cabral was shot and killed by unknown assailants in the Guatemalan capital Saturday.
The motive for the killing was unknown, but Guatemalan authorities suspected that the main target could have been a businessman who was accompanying Cabral.
The attack occurred at 5:20 am as Cabral was going to the airport after completing a schedule of performances. Officials said his two-car convoy was blocked on a main boulevard and shot with dozens of bullets from automatic weapons.
'These were not killers of the street,' President Alvaro Colom said. 'It is a well-planned operation by organized crime.'
Concert promoter Henry Farina, a Nicaraguan, was wounded in the attack.
'Obviously we will be talking to him,' Interior Minister Carlos Menocal said.
Cabral, 74, was a prominent figure in Latin American music for several decades.
'This is lamentable, reprehensible and shameful for Guatemala, that a person who sang about life, love and peace, has become a victim of violence in our country,' government spokesman Ronaldo Robles said.
