Jul 12, 2010, 17:41 GMT
New York - Walter Hawkins, lead singer of the gospel song world hit 'O Happy Day,' has died at his home in California from cancer, the internet service LA Late reported Monday.
The site said that Hawkins, a Grammy Award-winner and pastor, was 61 when he died at home in Ripon, east of San Francisco on Sunday.
Hawkins, his brother Edwin and a few other siblings and friends founded the 'Edwin Hawkins Singers' in 1967. Two years later they recorded 'O Happy Day,' hoping it might sell a few hundred copies.
The song became a worldwide hit, selling 7 million copies, and is regarded as the first gospel song to make it onto the pop music charts.
