Stockholm - Prolific Italian composer Ennio Morricone and Icelandic artist Bjork were Monday named co-winners of the Polar Music Prize 2010.
Morricone's breakthrough came with the soundtrack for the 1964 western movie, A Fistful of Dollars directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood, creating a 'brand new kind of music that set the tone for half a century of film music,' the jury said.
The 81-year-old has scored over 400 films, for directors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Roman Polanski.
Bjork was cited for 'her ability to take 'avantgarde to the top of the charts.'
The Icelandic artist has also 'embraced technological advances, combining computers with ancient sounds,' the jury said.
Swedish King Carl Gustaf was due to present the awards on August 20, each worth 1 million kronor (128,000 dollars), at the Stockholm Concert Hall that is also venue for the annual Nobel Prize award ceremony.
The Polar Music Prize was created in 1989 by the late Stig 'Stikkan' Andersson, former manager of Swedish super group ABBA.
Former winners include BB King, Mstislav Rostropovitch and Bob Dylan.
