U2 named top North American touring act in successful concert year
Jan 1, 2010, 17:23 GMT
New York - Irish rock group U2 was the top earner in US concert sales for 2009, with 123 million dollars in gross sales on 1.3 million tickets sold, according to US website Pollstar.
That put the band about 30 million dollars ahead of its closest competitor, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
The next highest earners were: the joint tour of Elton John and Billy Joel; pop singer Britney Spears; rock group AC/DC, country singer Kenny Chesney; newcomers the Jonas Brothers; the Dave Matthews Band; Fleetwood Mac; and Metallica.
'For all of the financial troubles of 2009, the concert business had an up year,' the website reported. 'The numbers for the Top 50 tours were better, across the board, than for 2008, be it total gross revenue or tickets sold.'
