Music icon Elvis Costello is set to return with the new studio album ‘Secret, Profane & Sugarcane.’ The album will be released by Hear Music on June 2nd, and was produced by T Bone Burnett in Nashville. Costello recorded the album during a three-day session with Burnett and Mike Piersante at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio. He was joined by Jerry Douglas (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin), Jeff Taylor (accordion) and Dennis Crouch (double bass). The groups of musicians are considered some of the best in traditional American country music, Bluegrass and beyond.
Costello let fans hear some of the songs, including “Down Among The Wines and Spirits”, during Costello’s acclaimed solo appearances as part of “The Bob Dylan Show” in late 2007.
‘Secret, Profane, & Sugarcane’ features ten previously unrecorded songs. “Sulphur to Sugarcane” and “The Crooked Line”, were co-written with T Bone Burnett while, “I Felt The Chill” marks Costello’s second recorded songwriting collaboration with Loretta Lynn.
The singer/songwriter also revisits two songs (originally written for Johnny Cash) from his catalogue in string band style. Select US tour dates featuring musicians from the album - dubbed "The Sugarcanes" - will follow in June and August, 2009.
