London - Paul McCartney has been given an enthusiastic welcome by 36,000 fans in his home city of Liverpool where he performed Beatles highlights in his contribution to this year's celebrations of Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture.
The concert at Liverpool's Anfield football stadium Sunday evening saw the ex-Beatle on stage for almost two hours, performing such enduring hits as Yesterday, Hey Jude and Let It Be.
Yoko Ono, widow of John Lennon, was among the many celebrities spotted in the crowd on a cool and overcast evening, as McCartney sang Lennon's Give Peace a Chance.
McCartney, who turns 66 this month, told the crowd in the Beatles home city: 'You've been brilliant tonight, I knew you would be.'
