Amy Winehouse was the big winner at last night's Grammy Awards (10.02.08) scooping five prizes.

The troubled singer, who was absent from the Los Angeles ceremony, won Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album for 'Back to Black'.

Her hit single 'Rehab' picked up a trio of accolades, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Winehouse, who checked into rehab last month, was unable to attend the ceremony because of complications relating to her US visa. However, TV audiences and those in attendance were treated to a performance of her songs 'You Know I'm No Good' and 'Rehab' via a satellite link from a London studio.

In her acceptance speech, the 24-year-old singer dedicated her Record of the Year win to her family and her husband Blake Fielder-Civil who is currently being held in a London prison awaiting trial.

Winehouse said: "To my mum and dad, for my Blake, my Blake incarcerated."

US officials overturned the decision to refuse Winehouse a visa to travel on Friday (08.02.08), but due to "logistics and timing complications" the star was still unable to attend the show.

The star missed out on a clean sweep after losing out in the Album of the Year category, her sixth nomination, to jazz legend Herbie Hancock, who collected the accolade for his LP 'River: The Joni Letters'.

Kanye West - who was due to perform a duet with Winehouse - was also triumphant, winning four awards including, Best Rap Song for 'Good Life', Best Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his collaboration with Common.

The hip-hop star paid tribute to his late mother in his acceptance speech for Best Rap Album for 'Graduation'.

Bruce Springsteen won three awards, while The White Stripes, Justin Timberlake, Carrie Underwood and Mary J. Blige each walked away with two gongs.

Performances include a duet between Beyoncé Knowles and Tina Turner, while Alicia Keys opened the show accompanied by archive footage of Frank Sinatra.
