Maybe it's just a ploy to get a better deal. With EMI losing artists right and left, they might be forced to rely on coldplay. Mark my words, they'll be signing 100 million contract soon.
Feeling a bit left out there Chris? What with all the kudos radiohead is getting right now. Is this your way of saying coldplay is as revolutionary as radiohead?
i seriously doubt it's a ploy. what's the use of signing a 100 million dollar contract with a label who doesn't promote or market properly? the music business has changed dramatically and EMI isn't on the cutting edge any longer. artists want to know their label is going to work for them, not the other way around. EMI have gotten fat and lazy. artist are taken for granted at EMI. like McCartney said, “Everybody at EMI had become part of the furniture. I’d be a couch; Coldplay are an armchair.” McCartney went straight to Starbuck's Hear Music label who worked very fast at marketing and promoting, whereas EMI would have lagged behind and McCartney's latest album would have gotten almost no promotion had it been on EMI. i'm sure Coldplay are feeling just as restricted with EMI as McCartney and Radiohead were.
