Cyndi Lauper inhales helium before she performs live.
The 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' singer, famed for high-pitched voice, was spotted sucking the voice-distorting gas out of balloons back stage at the Hetrick-Martin Institute benefit gala, in New York, last week.
A source told the New York Daily News newspaper: "Cyndi sucked the gas out of two helium balloons before going on stage to belt out 'Time After Time' and some of her other hits."
The 54-year-old singer also managed to upset her teenage backing singers at the charity concert - which raised money for the Harvey Milk High School for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) youths - when she introduced them to the audience as her "transgender choir".
One of the young singers fumed: "She keeps calling us transgender! We're not f***ing trannies!"
The Scissor Sisters also performed at the Institute's gala dinner.

Cyndi uses balloons when she does her vocal exercises. It's part of her warm up. I don't know too much about it, but I heard her explain once that it's an involuntary exercise that has something to do with compression. What you people said is ridiculous. Get your facts straight. You're probably wrong about the whole transgender thing too. Are you people a new version of The National Enquirer?
Yeah, guys? Like everyone else said, it's called a vocal exercise. Don't be so ignorant.
Cyndi uses the balloons for voice/breathing exercises. they do not contain helium! dumb
Anyone who's ever done this knows that the effect lasts no longer than the helium remains in the lungs--about ten seconds.
The person who wrote who wrote the article needs to be FIRED!
Cyndi showed and explained this vocal exercise technique when she sang 'Shine' on 'The Today Show' a few years back. In general, she said it's to relax the pharynx and larynx and it enables her to breathe better and hit the high notes.
Yes, but she blows into a empty balloon,
She even showed this technique to Amanda of the Dresden Dolls who loved it.
I don't know why people have to make up insulting stories
about one of the greatest Vocalists of all time (Cyndi Lauper),
if anything she deserves only the greatest respect.
Media, of course, exaggerates for money, popularity. This person should be FIRED!
