Britney Spears' VMA struggle

Britney Spears failed to impress with her lacklustre comeback performance at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (09.09.07).

The singer opened the glitzy ceremony at Las Vegas' Pearl Theatre at the Palms Casino Resort by lip-synching her new song 'Gimme More'.

Wearing a sparkly black bra and hot pants, the 25-year-old mother-of-two looked bleary eyed and unfit as she struggled to keep up with her energetic backing dancers, who threw themselves around stripper poles in an S+M-inspired set.

Cameras revealed celebrity guests, including 50 Cent, scoffing at Britney's performance, while Rihanna was seen in fits of laughter.

Following the song, comedienne Sarah Silverman came on stage and sarcastically said: "Was that incredible? Britney Spears, everyone. Wow. She is amazing. She is 25-years-old and she's already accomplished everything she's going to accomplish in her life. It's mind blowing."

MTV officials had reportedly warned Britney - who famously shared a same-sex kiss with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs - to keep her routine family friendly, or risk being kicked off the show.

Rihanna and Britney's ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake were the night's big winners.

Rihanna took home two of the most coveted awards, Video of the Year and Monster Single of the Year for her smash hit 'Umbrella', while Justin was named Male Artist of the year and Quadruple Threat of the Year.

During his acceptance speech for Male Artist of the Year, the heartthrob pop star took the opportunity to criticise MTV for replacing music with reality TV shows.

He said: "I want to challenge MTV right now to play more videos!"

Other winners included Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, who scooped Female Artist of the Year, Beyoncé Knowles and Shakira who won Most Earth-Shattering Collaboration for their song 'Beautiful Liar', Gym Class Heroes who were named Best New Artist and Fall Out Boy who walked away with Best Group.

Her 'performance' or whatever you can call it was sickening - like she was on something and didn't know which end was up. The 'song' or whatever you also want to call it was basically one word 'gimme more' over and over. I blame MTV for even considering putting this loser on to begin with - they got what they deserve - nothing!

What was wrong with her? Was she on something? She looked good, albeit her outfit was a little stupid. But her behavior??? And what was with that barely moving 'dancing'? She should just retire.

Is the media hypocritical or what? One of the complaints coming from CNN's Lola Ogunnaike and everyone else is that Britney was too fat for this. Get real. She looked fine. One minute the media is talking about how Hollywood aims for impossible bodies and the next minutes is calling Britney fat. It's just ridiculous.

No talent hack who doesn't deserve a penny she makes. Now being exposed for the fraud she is. Could never sing and now can't dance.

A lot of people are being very critical over a single performance event. I will agree that it was lackluster but to say 'this is the end for her' I think is going too far. She does have talent but it did not shine through at the MTV awards. Madonna kind of sucked a few times early on but she is still going. While I am skeptical about what she does party-wise I still think she has performance value.

What's really sad is that there's anyone, anywhere, who ever thought this woman was talented enough to maintain her career into adulthood. As a teen idol, she was good enough for other teeny-boppers, and that's it. As far as I'm concerned, MTV did us all a valuable service by hastening the day when she finally fades into much-deserved oblivion.

It is all Hollywood hype. Almost like the war on terror in Iraq. We have no say and all we can do is watch the bombing go on.
