Universal Republic Records’ newcomer Colbie Caillat, who previously reigned as the #1 unsigned artist on myspace, has been officially anointed by the growing legion of music fans flocking to the iTunes, with the singer/songwriter’s major label album debut, ‘Coco,’ rocketing to the #1 spot of the coveted iTunes Album chart within hours of its July 17 release.
The acclaimed album (“She’s become the Norah Jones successor” wrote USA Today) soared to the top spot of the music industry’s most popular entertainment destination in near-record time. Such rapid, multi-genre ascension of iTunes’ ultra-competitive chart (the site’s amazing growth now places it among the top 4 music retailers in the country) has quickly established the breathy vocalist as one of 2007’s breakthrough debut artists. The album’s first single, “Bubbly,” has also climbed to the Top 20 of iTunes pop singles chart, becoming a top-requested hit across U.S. radio stations, and aptly showcasing Caillat’s dusky range and low key acoustic style. The video for the single was shot on location in Caillat’s home turf of Malibu, CA, as well as Santa Barbra, with the video being added to VH1 this week.
Hailed by one critic as “A balmy blend of folk and pop with hints of Nelly Furtado and yes, Fleetwood Mac,” it was none other than Rolling Stone magazine who cited the laid-back singer just a few months ago as one of the music industry’s most promising unknown talents.
Now the California native finds herself as one of the year’s most in-demand newcomers, opening along with the band Lifehouse for rock icons The Goo Goo Dolls on their U.S. tour – they appear in Holmdel NJ on July 20, and Wantagh NY at celebrated Jones Beach on July 21. The charismatic songwriter will also appear at a special Harry Potter related promotion for global book retailer Borders at their signature Time Warner Center location in NYC on the evening of July 20. Caillat will do a special live performance (as will Lifehouse) and also sign copies of ‘Coco.’
Colbie is also featured this week in a number of special iTunes promotions, including prominent placing in their much buzzed about weekly newsletter. The CD sells for 7.99 on the site, with “Bubbly,” being named single of the week, entitling iTunes music customers to a free download of the popular song from now until the beginning of next week.
Colbie’s emergence as a force to be reckoned with in the digital social networking arena (the number of friends she accrued on her myspace site with no marketing arm behind her has topped more than 100,000) is further proof of the worldwide reach of new music ports such as myspace and iTunes, With COCO landing a Top 5 debut in New Zealand, and the singer being asked to perform in such far off locales as Australia, Germany, and the UK.
