Oviedo, Spain - US rock music-poet Bob Dylan is due to receive the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award in the art category this autumn, the awarding jury announced in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo Wednesday.
The 66-year-old musician beat among others filmmaker Milos Forman, Hollywood star Clint Eastwood and composer Ennio Morricone.
Dylan represented the spirit of a generation, the jury said.
According to the awarding body, Dylan was a 'living myth' and represented a generation that was dreaming of changing the world.
'Dylan brought song and poetry together in one body of work. He founded a school which influenced the perception of millions of people,' it said.
Dylan was a pioneer who had introduced literature into popular music, according to the jury.
The Prince of Asturias Awards, which fall into eight categories and are worth 50,000 euros (66,400 dollars) each, have been dubbed 'the Spanish version of the Nobel Prize.'
The awards are due to be presented in Oviedo this autumn by the Prince of Asturias, the Spanish heir to the throne Felipe.
Dylan is the second US citizen to be awarded the prize this year. Earlier, the jury had awarded the prize to former US vice president Al Gore in the category international cooperation.
