The Beatles iconic ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ has turned 40 and Britain has plans to celebrate the birthday with a series of events that demonstrates the love for the band and the album.
‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ was the Beatles’ eighth studio album and was released on June 1, 1967. The album featured a number of hit songs including “A Day in the Life,” “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” and “When I'm 64.” It has been labeled as one of the greatest albums ever recorded (although that is open to debate), and it could also be claimed the album ushered the band into a new era.
The BBC has announced plans to broadcast a documentary on the 1967 album – which will feature modern bands putting their take on some of the album’s hit singles. Bands announced to be part of the project include Oasis, The Killers and Kaiser Chiefs and more.
The city of Liverpool (where the Beatles formed) has announced plans to celebrate the anniversary of the album with a partnership with two other “Beatles” cities for tourist attractions – such as The Beatles Story which will give tourist the history behind the band and the Beatles-themed Casbah Coffee Club.
The University of Leeds has planned a discussion on the band between academics on June 19th. The discussion will focus on the album’s social and cultural impact. The album is currently available in various collector’s and limited editions on CD and remains a high ranked seller on Amazon and other online stores.
