Babs cancels Rome gig amid protest

Barbra Streisand has canceled a planned concert in Rome, but concert organizers have stated the decision wasn’t due to protest from Italian consumer groups over ticket prices. News broke last week that ticket buyers were angered with Streisand and concert promoters for the excessively high price of tickets. Instead, concert organizers have stated the concert’s cancellation was due to production delays. The performance was scheduled to take place on June 15th in the Stadio Flaminio. It would have been Streisand’s first performance in Italy, and the kickoff date for the singer’s European tour. Promoter Michael Cohl posted a statement explaining the decision on the Milano Concerti (the Italian organizer) website. The statement read: “We met with unexpected production delays. We deeply apologize to the fans in Rome." Cohl also stated ticket holders would be refunded and provided with a chance to get tickets for one of the other dates planned for Streisand's European tour.Streisand’s concert was protested last week by consumer groups Codacons and Adusbef. The two organizations argued the ticket prices (which ranged from $200 to $1,200) were “absurd and shameful.” The organizations asked authorities to deny Streisand the right to use of the stadium. In a statement, the groups argued the concert was being held in a stadium that was “public property and cannot be used for immoral deals that are shameful to a civilized country.”Steisand’s European tour is now scheduled to begin on June 18th in Zurich, Switzerland. The singer’s 2006 U.S. tour ranked as the second-highest grossing tour in North America, and brought in $92.5 million in gross sales. The average ticket price for a concert was $298. The singer’s European tour includes stops in Austria, France, Ireland and Britain.
