Amy Winehouse, Arctic Monkeys and Madonna triumphed at the prestigious Ivor Novello songwriting awards yesterday (24.05.07).

British singer Amy won Best Contemporary Song for hit 'Rehab' at the glitzy ceremony at London's Grosvenor House hotel.

The 23-year-old hellraiser joked about her reputation for heavy drinking when she collected her prize, saying: "Thank you all very much. I didn't even have time to get drunk - I've only been here about 15 minutes."

Amy, who married Blake Fielder-Civil in a secret Miami ceremony last week, jetted in from the US for the awards.

Madonna and her co-writer Stuart Price took the coveted International Hit of the Year for the disco-dance track 'Sorry'.

Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys picked up the Album Award for 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not', but only frontman Alex Turner was present to collect the prize as he revealed his other bandmates "were in bed".

Surprisingly, relatively unknown Wolverhampton folk singer Scott Matthews trumped Arctic Monkeys and Robbie Williams to take Best Song Musically and Lyrically for his ballad 'Elusive', which only reached number 56 in the UK charts.

Other winners included pop legend Sir Elton John, who revealed he is a fan of Amy when he collected the Performing Right Society's (PRS) Most Performed Work gong for his collaboration with the Scissor Sisters, 'I Don't Feel Like Dancin''.

Sir Elton told the audience of stars and industry names: "Amy, I'm coming to see you on Monday - so don't f***ing cancel again."

The Feeling were named Songwriters of the Year with their successful brand of 'soft-rock' and Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, accepted the Outstanding Song Collection prize.

The awards are presented by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters.
