R&B singer R. Kelly is set to release his new song "Rise Up" – which he wrote in the aftermath of the April 16th Virginia Tech shootings where 32 people died. Kelly has said the song is a way to promote healing.
"Rise Up" will be available on the digital market on May 15th and Kelly will give 100 percent of the net proceed to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, according to Kelly’s label Jive Records. The Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund was established to help give assistance to the victims of the families. The fund also helps with a number of other needs (including grief counseling) for those who were affected by the shootings.
The label said Kelly, 40, penned the ballad after he watched the events of the shooting on the news while he was on tour. The lyrics of the song include inspiration lines like: "Rise up, when you feel you can't go on, rise up, and all of your hope is gone, rise up, when you're weak and you can't be strong."
