Former Destiny Child singer to star in “The Color Purple”

Former Destiny Child singer Michelle Williams will join the cast of the Chicago production of "The Color Purple," according to an announcement made by the show’s producers. It is currently running on Broadway. Williams will join several of the stars who are currently part of the New York production including Jeannette Bayardell, and the Tony nominated Felicia P. Fields – who portrays Sofia on stage. The play’s producer Scott Sanders described Williams as the perfect choice for Shug Avery due to her background in music. Sanders also said the singer has a stage background which will aid her in the role.Williams, who also performed the title role in “Aida” when it ran on Broadway, has said the role of Shug Avery was a “dream come true” and an opportunity that she couldn’t pass up.
