On Monday, rock heartthrob Rod Stewart was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's New Year's Honors list. Other names honored with the new title included director Peter Greenaway and television actress Penelope Keith.
The group of honorees will be given a medal and be allowed to use the CBE initials after their name. Other rockers with the title include guitarist/singer Eric Clapton and Brian May – guitarist for the iconic rock band Queen. Huh Laurie, who has seen greater exposure with the success of the television show “House,” was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire – which is a lower rank than the CBE.
The honorees are selected by the British prime minister and the list is announced by Buckingham Palace. The Order of the British Empire honors was established by King George V in 1917.
