Olivia Newton-John files lawsuit against Universal over 'Grease' royalties

Singer/actress Olivia Newton-John has filed a lawsuit against the Universal Music Group Inc. for alleged failure to pay more than $1 million in royalties from the sales of the soundtrack to the hit film Grease.

The 1978 movie, which was based on the Broadway musical and also starred John Travolta, has become a pop culture icon and helped launch Newton-John to stardom – as both a singer and star.

Newton-John filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit on Friday, in Los Angeles County Superior court. The lawsuit states that Universal Music Group Inc. did originally pay the singer some royalties from the album sales, but that the company failed to make other contractual payments, according to information from Newton-John’s attorney John Mason.
