Copenhagen - Heart throb Justin Timberlake had a busy but rewarding evening Thursday when he hosted, performed and won two awards at the 13th edition of the MTV Europe Music Awards.

The 25-year-old American was named best male act and also won the best pop award, and thrilled the 3,500-strong crowd at Copenhagen's Bella Centre with a medley of hits including SexyBack and My Love.

On accepting his award for best male act from Suggabes, Timberlake thanked fellow nominees Kanye West and Pharrell for inspiring his career.

American Christine Aguilera won the award for best female act that was presented by Casino Royale stars Daniel Craig and Mads Mikkelsen of Denmark.

In a taped message, Aguilera said she was 'thrilled' and explained she was unable to attend the ceremony due to her upcoming tour. She faced rivalry from Beyonce, Madonna, Shakira and Nelly Furtado.

Another double-winner was Gnarls Barkley that won the award for best song (Crazy) and future sounds, respectively. Gnarls Barkley is a partnership between Atlanta-based DJ and producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) and rapper/singer Cee-Lo (Thomas Callaway).

British veterans Depeche Mode scooped the award for best group. One of the current trio Andrew Fletcher noted that MTV screened their first video some 20 years ago.

California rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers, nominated in four categories, had to settle for best album for Stadium Arcadium.

The best R&B award went to Rihanna from the Caribbean island nation of Barbados. She also performed at the show.

Hip-hop winner Kanye West said it was 'amazing to be recognized so far away from America.'

Las Vegas band The Killers collected the best rock award from Tomi Putaansuu, frontman of Finnish heavy metal band Lordi that won the Eurovision Song Contest 2006.

Earlier, The Killers braved freezing wintry conditions along with among others Snoop Dogg, Jet and Danish hip-hoppers Outlandish and performed in front of Copenhagen's City Hall where a huge stage and screen was erected, allowing some 7,500 fans to follow the prize ceremony.

The best alternative award went to English rock band Muse, while the best video award went to Justice Vs Simian for We Are Your Friends directed by Rozan & Schmeltz.

The MTV Europe Music Awards were established in 1994. The 2005 awards ceremony was hosted by Lisbon, Portugal.
