Oasis mad for BRIT

Oct 20, 2006, 8:49 GMT

Oasis are to be honoured with an Outstanding Contribution To Music prize at next year's BRIT Awards.

The Manchester band, fronted by Liam Gallagher, have sold over fifty million records worldwide and their contribution to music will be honoured at the prestigious ceremony to be held at London's Earl's Court on February 14 2007.

Chairman of the British Phonographic Industry Peter Jamieson said: "Oasis set the standard for many of the young rock bands who are currently enjoying success in the UK charts.

"As the BRIT Awards goes live for the first time in nearly two decades, it is appropriate that we should honour one of the most exciting live acts the UK has ever produced."

Oasis have won several BRITs during their lengthy career, including Best British Breakthrough Act in 1995 and Best British Album in 1996 for hit album '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?'.

They have also livened up many BRIT ceremonies with their outrageous antics.

In 1996, a drunken Liam insulted the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence on stage as he collected an award with his brother Noel and the rest of the band.

The Outstanding Contribution To Music award has previously gone to such music legends as The Beatles, Sting, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, U2 and Oasis' close friend Paul Weller.
