Madonna’s Moscow concert switched to Soviet-era Olympic Games stadium
By M&C News Aug 28, 2006, 17:41 GMT

The upcoming Madonna concert in the city of Moscow was changed by organizers on Monday and moved from the scheduled hilltop site that overlooked the city to the Luzhniki stadium that was used by the Soviet Union to hold the 1980 Olympic Games. The switch by organizers was blamed on issues with the size of the crowd, and control fears.
Moscow police have stated it is estimated that 250,000 people are expected to try and attend the pop diva’s concert, and that the old venue only had enough space for about 35,000. There had also been talk of moving the concert to an airfield outside the city.
City officials and concert organizers agreed to hold the concert at the Luzhniki stadium – which is better equipped to hold the crowd. The stadium was built in the 1950s, and is still used to hold Spartak Moscow soccer club home matches.
Madonna is scheduled to perform in Moscow on September 12th providing nothing else happens to delay or cancel the show. The concert has already been delayed a day – the original date for the show being September 11th.
The singer has seen a storm of controversy follow her over the past month after a mock crucifixion at a concert in Rome set of a backlash from Catholic Church and other religious leaders.
