Country icon Willie Nelson joins group wanting ban on the slaughter of horses

Country music icon Willie Nelson is a symbol in both the music industry and as a singer of songs about cowboy life. Now the singer/songwriter is joining others in the defense of wild horses and to help get a ban on the slaughter of those horses in the U.S. for the consumption of their meat abroad. A bill proposing a ban that would end the horse slaughter is up for vote in the U.S. House and is scheduled to take place on Sept. 7th.

Nelson has said that he learned about the slaughter of horses and the upcoming ban through country music producer Eddie Kilroy's show on satellite radio “Hank's Place.” The singer recently took over the radio show and re-titled it “Willie's Place.” The singer is known for his portrayal of the cowboy life in songs like “Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys." He also furthered the cowboy image in several films ranging from 1982’s Barbarosa to 1986’s Red Headed Stranger and the remake of Stagecoach – which also featured Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash
