That other band Supernova suing CBS to stop Tommy Lee’s Rock Star: Supernova
By M&C News Aug 14, 2006, 14:33 GMT
They might not have the “rock star” line-up, but the Orange County rockers named Supernova have filed an injunction in a San Diego court against CBS/Mark Burnett Prod. over the use of the name “Rock Star: Supernova” for the new music reality show.
The new Supernova rock group consists of former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke.
The injunction, which was filed on the grounds of copyright infringement, comes after the band filed a lawsuit in June to stop the show. Attorneys for the Orange County Supernova group and the television show were in settlement talks which appear to have ceased in the wake of the new filing.
Best known for their single “Chewbacca,” Supernova gained some exposure when the song was featured in the Kevin Smith film “Clerks.” The group originally formed in 1989 and has released three albums. They have been on the road since the release of their first album, and were said to be in the studio at work on a new release.
Attorneys for the band have stated the lawsuit is an attempt for the group to protect their name, and comes after “lengthy” negotiations with representatives of the show.
"Rock Star: Supernova" features a group of vocalist performing weekly on CBS for the band members and Dave Navarro – with the audience voting to help the members determine who is the right singer for the upcoming group.
