Tupac Shakur’s mother to take his ashes to Africa and meet with Nelson Mandela

Afeni Shakur will carry Tupac Shakur’s ashes to Africa in September for the 10th anniversary of the rapper’s death and is scheduled to meet with Nelson Mandela.

Shakur’s mother will travel to Soweto in South Africa and plans to remain there for a week. She will be accompanied by Gloria Cox (Shakur’s sister), and Set Shakur (his daughter). Along with meeting Mandela, Shakur’s mother is expected to tour various hospitals and orphanages in the region. She has stated that she felt the trip is a blessing because of the history there, and that it would be an honor Shakur to have his ashes rest in “the birthplace of the South African struggle for democracy.”

Shakur was shot four times in a drive-by shooting on Sept. 7th, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died six days after the shooting due to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. His music was known for its messages of political, economic, and racial equality. He released five studio albums during his lifetime, played roles in several films, and has had several posthumous albums have been released.
